The case
Lena Biddle has the name of an old Philadelphia family and almost none of the life that's supposed to come with it. Eighteen, painfully shy, freshly moved in with the grandmother who once disowned her mother, she pays her way by walking the neighbors' dogs — which means she has keys to half the building, a reason to be on every floor, and the particular invisibility of the help. Nobody minds what they say in front of the dog walker.
Then a professor across the square — a fixture at the conservatory, quietly working on something he wouldn't discuss — is found dead, and the manuscript he'd been guarding is gone. The police close the file fast: a sad, simple thing. Lena, who has spent her whole life noticing what other people step over, isn't so sure.
What's on the board
Old money and older grudges. A weekly card game that runs on gossip. A doorman who remembers everyone, and one resident he won't discuss. None of it points anywhere on its own. Pinned up together, with string between the facts, it starts to.
Everyone in the building has a version of the story. The dog walker is the only one with a key to every door.
